Program History

Give the Gift of Sight was founded in 1988 based upon the belief that clear vision is a basic right, not a luxury. Here are some program milestones we have reached along the way. 

 

1988

First Gift of Sight programs introduced to collect used eyewear and provide vouchers for free new eyewear

Partnership with Lions Clubs International established to help collect and recycle eyewear

1991

Partnership with Lions Clubs International expanded, enabling first international mission to Costa Rica: 8,600 people helped

1993

Hometown Day established across all North American Luxottica Retail stores, creating the single, largest day of giving within the GOS program

1994

President Clinton honored GOS with the President’s Volunteer Action Award for its commitment to providing eye care to the underprivileged

1995

GOS introduced first Vision Van “Seemore” to traverse North America and provide eye exams and eyewear to underprivileged children

1998

GOS introduced second Vision Van “Iris”

1999

One millionth recipient, Jessica, helped in Portland, OR.

GOS received Award for Excellence in Corporate Community Service from Points of Light Foundation

First Sight Night used-eyewear collection launched on Halloween

2000

GOS increased annual international missions to 10 per year

2001

GOS celebrated 10 years of international missions; 753,662 people helped on missions to date

Two millionth recipient, Julia, helped in Bolivia

2002

One millionth pair of eyewear recycled

2003

Three millionth recipient, Gabriel, helped in Ecuador

Two millionth pair of eyewear recycled

2004

GOS introduces week-long North American missions to help U.S. school children

2005

Four millionth recipient, Hannah, helped in New York

Vision Van assistance helped 6,155 people affected by hurricanes in Louisiana and Texas with exams and new eyewear

Three millionth pair of eyewear recycled

2006

GOS increased annual international missions to 16 per year

Five millionth recipient, LaVonte, helped in Chicago

2007

GOS increased annual international missions to 20 per year

Six millionth recipient, Victory, helped in Thailand

2008

GOS has 20/20 Vision with 20 International and 20 North American missions
