As you prepare for a "spooktacular" Sight Night event, you may have a few questions. Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions.
Q: I'm having trouble downloading collection materials. Can you tell me why?
A: To download and print collection materials on our site, you must download Adobe Acrobat Reader, a simple (free) software program that allows graphics to be seen by your computer.
If you've downloaded Adobe Acrobat and are still having trouble, please contact us at 1-877-605-4242 and choose option 4.
Q: I’d like to donate my used eyewear. Can someone come pick them up?
A: Thanks for your interest in donating your used eyeglasses. If no one comes to your door on Sight Night, you may donate them at any LensCrafters or Lions club. Unfortunately, we do not have volunteers to pick up eyeglasses throughout the year.
Q: What kinds of used eyeglasses do you accept?
A: We’re looking for used prescription eyeglasses and non-prescription sunglasses of all styles, sizes and colors. The only thing we ask is that the eyewear are complete pairs that are ready to wear.
We do not need stray lenses, pairs of lenses, contact lenses or eyeglass frame parts. The eyewear you donate will be kept intact and not taken apart. That's why it's important to collect complete pairs.
On a side note, we do not need eyewear cases. You can save shipping and storage space. We encourage you to donate cases to a group who will use them like Goodwill or Salvation Army.
Q: May I get a tax receipt for eyewear donations?
A: We can provide a tax receipt for U.S. donors. It is up to the donor to assess the dollar value of the donation, since the cost of eyewear varies.
If you haven’t already done so, forward your address so our Sight Night representative can mail a tax receipt to you "frightfully" soon.
Q: Can I get a local contact to help me with my project?
A: We’d be happy to recommend a local contact to help with your Sight Night project. You may contact your local LensCrafters store and ask for the Gift of Sight Captain, or find your local Lions club president here.
Q: There’s not a store or Lions club near me. Can I still participate?
A: Absolutely! Once you’re done with Sight Night, simply ship the eyeglasses you collect to one of six Lions club recycling centers in the US. For a list of addresses, click here. And don’t forget to tell us how you did by filling out your Feedback form by November 11!
Q: Our scout troop is interested in earning a patch for Sight Night. Any suggestions?
A: Your Sight Night event may qualify for a patch depending on your troops' requirements. Scout troops in the past have worked toward a recycling patch, collection patch or community service patch. One Girl Scout Troop even developed their own Sight Night patch last year using the official logo.
Scouts may receive the new Lions Award for Scouts. Lions clubs can present the Lions Clubs-Boys Scouts of America Community Service Award Patch or Lions Clubs-Girl Scouts of the USA Service Award to Scouts who participate in joint Lions/Scouts service projects. Click here for more.
Q: I’m from another country. Can I still participate in Sight Night?
A: Sure! We’re excited that you’ll scare up eyeglasses from another country! It will probably be easier for you to download the collection materials here at any time.
After you’re done with the event, you may donate the eyeglasses to any Lions club or international recycling center. Click here to locate a recycling center. Make sure you tell us how you did by filling out your Feedback form by November 11!
Q: What will happen to the eyeglasses I collect on Sight Night?
A: The eyeglasses will be recycled and hand-delivered to people in developing countries, such as El Salvador, Mexico, Peru and Ecuador by Luxottica and Lions club volunteers. Vist the International Mission page to learn more.
Q: What does it mean to "recycle" used eyeglasses?
A: Used eyeglasses are cleaned, repaired, then each pair is classified by prescription. The prescription is entered into a computerized inventory system that organizes prescriptions. At the clinic site, laptops with special optical software are used to help us identify the best prescription match for each recipient. The eyeglasses are labeled, boxed and shipped along with 30,000 pairs to the next international mission destination.
Q: Why aren’t used eyeglasses collected on Sight Night given to people in the U.S. and Canada?
A: In the U.S. and Canada, Luxottica and Lions club volunteers deliver new glasses to those in need throughout the year in stores, in our communities and on our traveling Vision Vans. Two out of three people helped through the Gift of Sight program are helped in North America.
